Chapter 17

Slater and Denzil, who had rejoined us, led Fernandez and me up the parking garage, floor by floor. We wove in between cars and checked the door handle for the electrical room that the parking attendants downstairs had mentioned. We hadn’t seen anything amiss until our scene came into view on the fifth floor. A handful of patrol officers were gathered around a downed man about ten feet away from the line of parked cars on our left. Another pair of guys seemed to be looking at an SUV on our right. The SUV appeared to be missing the rear glass and the quarter glass on the driver’s side. Shattered safety glass littered the ground all around the vehicle.

“Hey, Sarge,” one of the officers standing beside the SUV said.

“Lloyd, Harvey.” Fernandez nodded. “This was this guy’s wheels?”

“Pretty sure. We haven’t pulled an ID off of him, but we ran the tag on the Honda here,” said the one whose name tag read Lloyd. “The registration comes back to a Beauregard Phillips. And that looks like that’s him over there from the DL photo.” Lloyd jerked his chin at the man on the ground.

“We think maybe this guy was attacked or something getting into his vehicle and managed to draw his weapon and start firing,” the other officer, Harvey, said. “We’ve got a dent from the round here that took out this back- and rear-window glass.” He pointed at a fresh-looking dent and patch of missing paint near the rear quarter panel window. “Now I’m not a ballistics expert or anything, but that looks like a pretty damn clear trajectory if you were to shoot upward from about there.” He pointed at the ground outside of the driver’s door between the Honda SUV and the sedan parked next to it.

“So our guy over here was carrying,” I said. “Drew and fired on his attacker and gets himself killed in the process?”

“Kind of looks that way,” Lloyd said.

I looked at the Honda’s SUV and the open door, then I looked over at where the man lay. “He actually went after him. Otherwise, why the hell would he be over there?”

Fernandez nodded. “Yeah, if you fired on this guy and he shot back, you’d either be dead between the vehicle right there or dead inside of your vehicle, trying to get away.” Fernandez started walking to our downed man. “Do we have a gun?” he asked over his shoulder.

“In the guy’s hand,” Harvey said.

I followed Fernandez to the body. Harvey and Lloyd did as well.

Fernandez nodded a couple of hellos to the officers nearby, and I got my first look at the guy on the ground. Our man lay flat on his back, his eyes still open. He had a noticeable cut across his forehead. Blood surrounded the body. Some looked smeared, and some looked as if it had pooled after he’d come to rest. Blood covered the guy’s shirt and arms. I could clearly see a pair of entry wounds in his big belly.
